Surfacing

Safety is the most important aspect of any playground or play area we build. And even though our equipment adheres to the industry's highest safety standards, it is only as safe as the surface on which it's built.

At Noah's pARK & Playgrounds™, you will find an array of ADA-compliant and non-compliant surfacing materials that provide impact-absorbing safety measures and meet ASTM F1487-05 and CPSC 325 guidelines.

If it's time for your organization to "top-off" or completely start over with your Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) surface, call for a quote. It's helpful to keep the following in mind:

  • Length x Width: Have the LxW perimeter area measurement at the longest or widest points when you call for a surfacing quote. (If you are unsure and are an existing Noah's client, there is a good chance we have your playground measurement(s) on file.
  • Depth: Have the depth measurement needed for either a top-off or otherwise. Refer to ASTM F1487 for proper attenuation ratings/depth requirements. Depth guidelines are critical to the overall safety of your children, and compliance to ASTM ratings are almost always required.
  • Old or New?  Determine if you need to have the old EWF removed for new surfacing.
  • Who's installing?  If you have a great maintenance team or ample volunteers and want to spread your EWF or rubber mulch, then let us know you want a Delivery Only.  If not, Noah's Park and Playgrounds can provide installation services.
  • ASTM Compliance:   Unsure about current surfacing and if it meets ASTM compliance? We can help you make this determination. Often times this is as simple as emailing pictures of equipment-surfacing pictures of your playground.
  • Border in good shape?  Railroad ties are still in place in many playgrounds, and is not always the best option due to longterm rot and splintering. Plastic playground border timbers are the best choice for this purpose, as well as helping to define critical use-zones for your equipment. They are also moveable and allow for future expansion and repositioning should you add onto your play space.
  • CPSC Depth Requirement Update:  The CPSC November 2010 'Safety Surface Depth' guidelines are confusing. Noah's Park and Playgrounds asked for clarification from both the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) in order to know how to help our clients answer this criticial question about surface and fall height safety.
